Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body that holds everything together. It is found in your bones, ligaments, tendons, connective tissues and skin, and plays a role in your overall health. The word collagen comes from the Greek word “kolla” meaning glue. Collagen literally acts like glue to provide form and support for your body.
Collagen is composed of a series of amino acids, including glutamine, arginine, proline and glycine. Amino acids are the building blocks for proteins and are essential to synthesizing hormones and moving chemical messages through the body.
As for collagen, amino acids bind together to form procollagen, a precursor for the protein that’s still strong enough to provide strength and structure. To become collagen, procollagen undergoes a grouping process, forming long collagen chains with more than one thousand amino acids. Those chains arrange themselves side by side and bind together into fibrils, or three-dimensional helices.
